Windows 11 KB5127936 is Microsoft’s optional October 2026 preview update for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 26H2, and it previews the features expected in the November 2026 update. You can install it today from Settings > Windows Update by choosing the optional preview and selecting Download & install. Many of its features roll out gradually, so some may take time to appear even after installing.
Quick summary
- What it is: An optional, non-security preview update released by Microsoft on 28 October 2026 (OS Builds 26200.9818 and 26300.9818).
- Who gets it: Windows 11 version 25H2 and 26H2, all editions.
- Headline features: A faster, customisable File Explorer right-click menu, Cloud rebuild recovery, a modern AutoPlay dialog, a Restore Summary after setup and a smarter hibernate policy.
- Should you install it? Only if you want the new features early; otherwise wait for the regular November security update.
- Time needed: One download and one restart.
What you need before installing Windows 11 KB5127936
You need a PC running Windows 11 version 25H2 or 26H2, an internet connection and enough free space for a cumulative update. Microsoft also requires the update released on or after 10 June 2025 (such as KB5060842) to be installed first, which most up-to-date PCs already have.

- Check your version: Open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications, or press Win + R, type winver and press Enter.
- Back up first: Save important files to OneDrive, an external drive or your company’s backup system. Preview updates are tested, but they are still optional early releases.
- Plug in your laptop so it does not run out of battery during the restart.
Windows 11 version 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions no longer receive non-security preview updates starting with this release, so they will not see KB5127936. If you are still on an older version, our guide on how to upgrade to Windows 11 26H2 explains the move.
How to install Windows 11 KB5127936 step by step
Installing the preview takes a few clicks in Windows Update. Follow these steps:
- Open Settings with Win + I and select Windows Update.
- Optional: turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available”. This toggle tells Windows to give you new features from gradual rollouts sooner.
- Select Check for updates. The preview appears as “2026-10 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11, version 25H2 (or 26H2) … (KB5127936)”, sometimes under Optional updates.
- Select Download & install next to it. Windows downloads only the parts your PC does not already have.
- Restart when prompted. Save your work first; the restart can take several minutes.
- Confirm the build. Run winver again: you should see OS Build 26200.9818 on 25H2 or 26300.9818 on 26H2.

IT teams and offline PCs can also download the standalone package from the Microsoft Update Catalog by searching for KB5127936; it lists x64 and Arm64 packages for both 25H2 and 26H2.
New features in KB5127936 and how to use them
Most of the new features are part of a gradual rollout, which means Microsoft switches them on for different PCs at different times. Here is what to look for and where.
| Feature | What it does | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Customisable right-click menu | Faster, simpler File Explorer context menu; turn commands like Send to on or off, add Print, show Cut/Copy/Paste as text | Right-click a file > Customize menu |
| File Explorer shortcut | Type ~ in the address bar to jump to your user folder (e.g. ~\AppData) | File Explorer address bar |
| Modern AutoPlay | New dialog for phones, cameras and drives, with dark mode and notifications | Connect a phone or USB drive |
| Cloud rebuild | Reinstalls Windows 11 using an image and drivers from Windows Update, no USB needed | Settings > System > Recovery > Rebuild PC |
| Restore Summary | Shows which settings and Store apps were restored when you set up a new PC from a backup | After restoring a backup on a new device |
| Adaptive hibernate | Less hibernation above 80% battery, earlier hibernation below 10% | Automatic on Modern Standby laptops |
| Live Captions option | New “Include screen reader audio” setting, off by default | Settings > Accessibility > Captions |
| Phone Link in Start | Hover over a recent message or notification to preview it | Phone Link > Settings > Start menu personalization |
The update also refreshes the Privacy & security page in Settings, grouping Camera, Microphone and Location controls, and adds quicker Exit to Desktop and Power Options in Xbox mode’s Gaming Task View.

How to customise the new right-click menu
The new File Explorer context menu works as before by default, so you only need to change it if you want to.
- Right-click any file or folder in File Explorer.
- Choose Customize menu. A Settings page opens.
- Turn built-in commands such as Send to or Create shortcut on or off, or add Print.
- Choose where app extensions appear, or hide their submenu.
- Optionally show Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete and Share as text instead of icons, and move Properties to the bottom.
Tip: hold Shift and right-click the desktop to see more options.
How to use Cloud rebuild (and when not to)
Cloud rebuild reinstalls Windows 11 by downloading a fresh image and drivers from Windows Update. It is useful when Windows is badly broken, but it erases data, so treat it as a last resort.
- Go to Settings > System > Recovery and select Rebuild PC. The PC restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment.
- If Windows cannot start at all, the PC enters the recovery environment on its own after repeated boot failures. Then choose Troubleshoot > Recovery and uninstall > Cloud rebuild.
- Connect to wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi. With this update, recovery can reuse eligible Wi-Fi networks already saved in Windows.
- Review the Windows build, edition and language, then confirm the data-loss warning.
- Choose to remove your files, or remove them and securely erase the drive. Microsoft notes that sanitisation cannot be undone.
Back up first. Small businesses that manage several PCs should pair this with a proper backup and disaster recovery plan before relying on it.

What to do if KB5127936 does not show up or causes problems
If the update or a feature is missing, the cause is usually your Windows version or the gradual rollout. Try these fixes:
- Update not listed: Confirm you are on 25H2 or 26H2, then select Check for updates again. On 24H2 Enterprise or Education, preview updates are no longer offered.
- Installed but no new features: Gradual-rollout features may take days or weeks to arrive. Keep the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle on.
- USB audio stopped working: Microsoft lists a known issue where some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices may show “This device cannot start (Code 10)” or play no sound after the 8 September 2026 security update. Microsoft says it is working on a fix.
- Something else broke: Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and remove the latest cumulative update.

Frequently asked questions
Is KB5127936 a security update?
No. It is an optional non-security preview update. Microsoft usually includes these changes in the next month’s regular Patch Tuesday security update.
Is it safe to install KB5127936?
It is an official Microsoft release, but previews are optional and can have bugs. Install it on your main PC only if you want the features now, and back up first.
Can I uninstall KB5127936?
Yes. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and remove the latest cumulative update, then restart.
Why can’t I see Cloud rebuild or the new right-click menu?
These features roll out gradually, so not every PC gets them on day one. Make sure the update is installed (OS Build 26200.9818 or 26300.9818) and wait for the rollout to reach your PC.
Bottom line
Windows 11 KB5127936 is worth installing if you want the new right-click menu, Cloud rebuild and other November features early, and you have a backup. If you prefer stability, skip it and let the regular November security update bring the same changes.
