The speaker firmware in this Google Home update focuses on audio quality and reliability. According to Google’s release notes:

  • Streaming is smoother on Nest Audio, Google Home and Google Home Mini.
  • Stereo pairs are retuned to reduce boomy bass and keep the minimum volume audible.
  • The Google Home app finds the Google Home Speaker, Nest Audio and Nest Mini faster and more reliably on your local network.
  • Bluetooth audio no longer pauses after you say “resume”.
  • Setup and connection failures on Wi-Fi 7 access points using WPA3 are fixed.
  • Stereo pairs and speaker groups no longer disappear from the app.
  • You can end Google Meet calls by voice again.

The Wi-Fi 7 fix is the one to watch if you have bought a new Wi-Fi 7 router: if your speaker refused to set up on it, this update should help.

Chromecast with Google TV gets a security patch

Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and (HD) move to the August 2026 Android security patch level. Google also lists improvements to connectivity, media streaming and display performance, along with general stability fixes.

A newer security patch closes known Android vulnerabilities, so it is worth making sure your streamer installs it. Google’s Chromecast firmware page lists build UTTA.260813.002 with the August 2026 patch for the 4K model. Nest Wifi and Nest Wifi Pro fixes

Google lists these router changes:

  • Nest Wifi (2019) router and point: more resilient mesh networking, improved DNS fallback, and stability and security fixes.
  • Nest Wifi Pro: automatic switch to your internet provider’s DNS when public DNS is blocked, more reliable node setup, better mesh signal and client steering, more stable connection components, and Google Home platform security updates.

The DNS fallback is useful when a network blocks public DNS servers, because the router can now fall back to your provider’s DNS instead of losing name resolution. Router firmware is also a security matter; our Wi-Fi router security tips cover the other basics.

Google Home app changes

The app update brings several practical improvements, some limited to Android:

ChangePlatform
Matter smart plugs and energy monitors show live power (mW) and total energy (kWh)Android
Garage doors, gates, windows, blinds and cabinets get the right icons and controlsAndroid
One-tap energy-saving shortcut on thermostat controls and home viewNot specified
Google Home Premium subscribers can see and enable features from their profileNot specified
Camera timeline no longer shows “Video Not Available” at event ends or gapsiOS

Devices no longer briefly show “Offline” after a short network hiccupiOS

Google also lists improvements for older Nest cameras that have moved to the Google Home app, including Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor (1st gen), Nest Doorbell (wired, 1st gen) and Nest Cam IQ. These include steadier Wi-Fi reconnection, faster switching to night vision and audio-video sync fixes on the first-generation doorbell.

Gemini for Home improvements

Gemini for Home is still marked as early access, and Google’s notes do not list which countries or languages get these changes. The fixes include:

  • Better handling of requests to move music or video to a speaker or display in another room
  • Fewer cases of speakers saying “Sorry, I didn’t understand” when nobody spoke to them
  • Clearer handling of sleep timers, regular timers and alarms
  • A fix for timers and alarms whose volume was set to zero

How to get the Google Home update

Google’s release notes do not give a fixed rollout schedule or list of regions, and they say features can take time to reach everyone even on the latest app version. To be ready:

  1. Update the Google Home app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Keep your Nest speakers, Chromecast and Nest Wifi plugged in and connected to the internet so they can download firmware.
  3. On Chromecast with Google TV, go to All settings > System > About > System update to check manually.
  4. To see a device’s firmware version, open the Google Home app, touch and hold the device tile, then tap Settings > Device information and look under Technical information.
  5. If a fix you need hasn’t arrived, check again over the next few days.

If you manage smart speakers, cameras and Wi-Fi across an office or shop, keeping firmware current is part of routine IT upkeep. A managed IT services provider can take on firmware tracking if your team doesn’t have the time.
