WhatsApp Group Status is a new way to post a 24-hour status update that only the members of one group can see. WhatsApp announced it on 29 October 2026 together with three other group-chat changes: pins that never expire, sending message history to people after they join, and a filter that shows only the unread chats where you were mentioned or replied to.
If you run a family, society, college or office group, these four changes cut down on missed messages and repeated questions. Below is what each feature does, how to use it, and what to check if it hasn’t reached your phone yet.
Quick summary
| Feature | What it does | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Group Status | Post a status only one group’s members can see; they can view, react and add their own | Group members |
| Pin with no expiry | Keep an important message pinned indefinitely instead of choosing an end time | Members who can pin in that group |
| History for new members | Send recent messages to someone after they have joined, by tapping their name in the chat | Members and admins, unless the admin has turned it off |
| Mentions and replies filter | Shows unread group chats where you were @mentioned, got a direct reply or were in an @all message | Everyone |
What is WhatsApp Group Status?
WhatsApp Group Status is a status update shared with a single group instead of your whole contact list. Members of that group can view it, react to it and add their own updates, and like a normal status it disappears after 24 hours.

Think of it as a shared, short-lived noticeboard. A cricket club can post today’s venue, a housing society can share a water-supply photo, and a project team can drop a quick progress shot, all without adding more messages to the main chat. People outside the group, including your other contacts, do not see these updates.
How to post a Group Status
- Update WhatsApp from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Open the group you want to share with.
- Look for the new group status option that WhatsApp adds for groups, then pick a photo, video or text, just as you would for a normal status.
- Post it. Members can now view it, react to it and add their own update for the group.
WhatsApp’s announcement does not spell out the exact button names for each platform, so the labels on your phone may differ slightly. If you don’t see the option yet, the feature hasn’t reached your account.
How to pin a message with no expiry
WhatsApp has let people pin messages for a while, but until now you had to choose an expiry time first. With this update you can keep a pinned message at the top of the group for as long as you need.
- Open the group chat and tap and hold the message you want to pin.
- Choose Pin. On some Android phones it sits under the three-dot More menu.
- When asked how long to keep it pinned, choose the option without an end date, if it appears on your app.
- To remove it later, tap and hold the pinned message and choose Unpin.
Good uses: group rules, a fixed meeting link, a payment QR note for a society fund, or emergency contact numbers.
How to share old messages with a new member
You can now send recent group messages to someone after they have joined. Earlier in 2026, WhatsApp added an option to share recent history only at the moment you added someone. The new change lets you do it later by tapping the new member’s name in the group chat.
When WhatsApp launched Group Message History in February 2026, it described these rules:
- You choose to send it. History is never shared automatically.
- Between 25 and 100 recent messages could be shared at that time; WhatsApp’s October post does not say whether this limit has changed.
- Everyone in the group is told when history is sent, and the shared messages show sender names and timestamps.
- Group admins can turn the option off for their group, though admins can still share history themselves.
- The shared messages stay end-to-end encrypted.
Steps
- Open the group after the new member has joined.
- Tap the new member’s name where it appears in the chat.
- Choose the option to send recent messages and confirm.
Before you share, scroll back and check that nothing private is in those messages, because the new member will be able to read them.
How the mentions and replies filter works
The new filter shows only unread group chats where someone mentioned you, replied directly to you, or used an @all message. It sits with the other chat filters at the top of your chat list.
This is the most useful change for people in dozens of busy groups. Instead of opening every group to see if someone needs you, tap the filter, answer the chats that matter, and leave the rest for later.
Feature not showing? Try these fixes
WhatsApp’s 29 October announcement does not give a rollout timeline, so not everyone will see every feature on the same day. Try these steps:
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version from the Play Store or App Store.
- Close and reopen the app after updating.
- Check whether a group admin has turned off message-history sharing for that group.
- Wait a few days and check again; WhatsApp often enables new features in stages.
While you’re in your settings, it’s also worth reviewing your account security. Our step-by-step guide to securing a crypto exchange account in India covers two-step verification habits that apply to WhatsApp too.
Tips WhatsApp shared for calmer group chats
WhatsApp’s post also suggested three existing features that pair well with the new ones:
- Reply privately: answer one person from inside a group without starting a side discussion in the main chat.
- Single-answer polls: switch off “allow multiple answers” when you need one clear decision.
- Member tags: add a short tag that shows a member’s role in that group, such as “Treasurer” or “Class rep”.

Frequently asked questions
Can people outside the group see a WhatsApp Group Status?
No. A Group Status is shared only with members of that group. It is not shown to your other contacts.
How long does a Group Status last?
Like a normal WhatsApp status, a Group Status disappears after 24 hours.
Does sharing message history break end-to-end encryption?
No. WhatsApp says Group Message History stays end-to-end encrypted, and everyone in the group is notified when history is sent.
Why can’t I see the new WhatsApp group features yet?
WhatsApp hasn’t published a rollout timeline. Update the app, restart it and check again over the next few days.
Bottom line
WhatsApp Group Status and the other three changes target the most common group-chat problems: important messages getting buried, newcomers asking what they missed, and people missing direct questions. Update the app, pin your group’s key information, and try the mentions filter if you’re in many busy groups.
