Introduction

Health checkup is always beneficial whether it is for humans or machines. When it comes to Apple hardware, there are dozens of sensors and components that can get hot and other things can arise.

The hardware won’t inform you about the issue; it is you who need to keep an update on the health status of your hardware. Dealing with this can be a daunting task, so let’s begin with how you can do this.

Checking Your Hardware

We will move from part to part for checking the overall health.

1. Hard drives

As we know, there are plenty of hard drives on a laptop. They may fail without notifying you. So, when it comes to hard drives, we would like to recommend DriveDx and S.M.A.R.T Utility.

These utilities can run a quick scan and tell you if all the drives are in good shape or not. They are excellent in this job and they can be used once in a while to keep an eye on hard drives.

They can be run every hour to get notified about the occurring issue.

2. Memory (RAM)

Testing the memory can be quite tricky because you would like to have all the details. If you run the test on OS, then several gigabytes are in use; therefore, conducting a RAM test is not possible.

You can use the following utilities:

  • Remember- it is a graphical interpretation that can give your RAM a proper workout with several algorithms. If an issue is there, this utility can require a lot of time to fix all the things.
  • Memtest86- though it is based on Remember but gives more options. For running this, you need to have a bootable flash drive. The interface is text-based, and it will give your RAM a nice workout without any exposure to issues.

3. Processor (CPU)

It works hand-in-hand with RAM, and while testing, the CPU might get a bit of work.

Benchmarking

This utility has a range of algorithms for testing the performance of the CPU. The score at the end can indicate the health and performance of your Mac hardware.

Prime95

It is a utility that tests the stress on the CPU. It works in different ways and also taxes the caches and communication with RAM.

4. Graphics (GPU)

Graphics are important if you are a gamer or not, and Apple hardware relies on GPU to render Windows and effects. But how will you know if your GPU is providing you with the power that you need?

Benchmarking

Just like CPU, benchmarking is useful for GPU as well. The test is pretty faster with this utility. So, you need to run it for some time to have an idea of performance and cooling.

5. Sensors

One of the major issues that arise while testing the overall health is with a sensor. There are some utilities that can read and test out these sensors to get the exact value.

While running the diagnostics of the hardware, the sensors must also be checked. First of all, you must know about various sensors.

  • Temperature sensors- they are quite a few in the hardware of Apple. They can run slow and 100% as well.
  • Voltage sensors- as it is clear from the name, these sensors register volts.
  • Current sensors- they are responsible for registering Amps.
  • Power sensors- they mainly register Watts.
  • Light sensors- these are the ones that register light.

6. Physical (keyboard, ports, and enclosure)

Now, we are going to cover the physical aspects.

  • Ports- for this, you just need to put your USB and connect it to see if the ports are well.
  • Keyboard- for the testing to check the keyboard, you need to open up a TextEdit file and test every letter. If you want to check other keys, then you can use a handy macOS built-in tool, which is called Keyboard Viewer.

What About The Cooling System?

If your hardware has passed these tests successfully, then the last thing is cooling. The system of cooling is more than just the fan and involves heatsinks, thermal paste, thermal pad, and airflow.

Try to use your Mac hardware in a cool place, open it and clean out the dust

Congratulations!

Now, you have done it! If your hardware has passed all the tests successfully, then your hardware is in a healthy state. Maintaining Apple is tough, but when you get successful results from testing, it is the best feeling.

Don’t forget that Mac hardware is delicate, so you need to take care of it. Moreover, it is better to keep an eye on the performance of your hardware.

Running the above tests is a much better way to keep your Apple hardware in a healthy state.
