On 29 October 2026, attackers drained about $6.3 billion in crypto from Binance’s hot wallets. That makes it the largest crypto theft on record. Binance says it will cover all user losses from its SAFU fund and company money, and blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs has linked the attack, with high confidence, to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit. If you hold crypto on Binance from India, your balance should be safe according to Binance. The bigger risk right now is the scammers who will try to use the confusion against you.

What happened: the timeline
TRM Labs published a detailed minute-by-minute account, and Binance has issued two official security updates. Here are the key moments. All times are UTC (add 5 hours 30 minutes for IST).
- 28 October: According to TRM Labs, the attacker’s wallet received small amounts from the Tornado Cash mixer, and the attack code was tested on other wallets. Preparation started at least 36 hours before the theft.
- 29 October, 20:05–20:09: Binance wallets on the XRP Ledger sent out about 233 million XRP.
- About 20:20: A Binance Bitcoin hot wallet sent 18,270 BTC. Within minutes, a Tron hot wallet sent 612.7 million USDT. On Ethereum, a hot wallet was hijacked and emptied.
- 21:01 and 21:04: Tether and Circle began freezing stolen stablecoins.
- Late 29 October: Binance confirmed it was investigating, said user funds were safe, and paused withdrawals on multiple networks.
- 30 October: Binance’s first official update put the impact at about $6.3 billion. A second update said the investigation had found more points of breach, and laid out a plan to cover every loss.
TRM Labs says the money was taken across ten blockchains, including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Tron, XRP Ledger, Solana and Polygon. The previous record was the roughly $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025. The FBI blamed the same North Korean group for that one.

Who is behind it?
TRM Labs says, with high confidence, that TraderTraitor carried out the attack. This is a North Korean state-backed unit known for targeting crypto companies. Other blockchain analytics firms have reportedly reached the same conclusion. Binance’s leadership has been more careful. Its co-CEO said the investigation has not yet attributed responsibility to anyone. North Korea usually denies involvement in such attacks.
How the attack worked, in plain words
Exchanges keep most coins in offline “cold” storage. A smaller pool sits in online “hot” wallets so that withdrawals go through quickly. The attackers went after the hot wallets.
- A way in: Binance’s initial investigation says an attacker compromised a DevOps engineer’s laptop. Later findings revealed additional breach points.
- Inside the system: From there, the attacker reached a service container (a packaged piece of software that runs a job) and submitted unauthorised withdrawal transactions.
- Signing the theft: TRM Labs believes the attacker gained the ability to make Binance’s hot-wallet signing system approve transfers across several chains. On Ethereum, the attacker used a newer feature called EIP-7702 to make a hot wallet run a “sweeper” program that sent out its whole balance in about three and a half minutes.
- Moving fast: Most of the money left within about 20 minutes, before freezes could catch up.
Binance says it has found no evidence that any wallet’s private key leaked. In other words, the attackers seem to have abused the system that uses the keys rather than stealing the keys themselves. A full technical post-mortem has been promised but not yet published, so treat any detailed “root cause” you see on social media with caution.
Is your money safe?
Binance’s second update says: “Binance will absorb the financial impact of these stolen funds, not our users.” According to Binance, it has reserved more than $6.34 billion from its SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) and corporate treasury. That includes about $5 billion held in the same assets that were stolen, such as USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH and BNB, which covers roughly 80% of the loss. It says it is buying the rest on the market and through OTC deals. It also plans a Proof of Reserves snapshot, with results expected by Monday, 2 November 2026.
These figures come from Binance itself and have not been independently audited yet. The Proof of Reserves report will be the first real check.
What Binance users in India should do right now
- Don’t panic-sell. Binance says balances are covered, and withdrawals are expected back in phases. Selling in a hurry locks in a low price. In India, every sale of crypto also attracts 1% TDS, and crypto losses cannot be set off against other income.
- Ignore every “refund” or “compensation” message. Expect fake SMS, emails, WhatsApp and Telegram messages, and ads, promising hack refunds. Binance does not need your password, 2FA code or seed phrase to cover losses, and you do not need to “claim” anything through a link.
- Check official channels only. Type binance.com yourself, or use the official app, and read the announcements section. Binance asks users to follow only its official channels and to contact support from inside the app or website.
- Tighten your security settings. Turn on app-based 2FA or a passkey, set an anti-phishing code (so real Binance emails show it), and turn on the withdrawal address whitelist.
- Review devices and API keys. Log out of sessions you don’t recognise. Delete API keys you no longer use, especially any with withdrawal rights.
- Keep records. Take screenshots of your balances and transaction history now, for your taxes and in case of any dispute later.
- Report scams. If someone targets you, report it on cybercrime.gov.in or call the 1930 helpline.
What it means for crypto exchanges and India’s rules
Under India’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), crypto exchanges that serve Indian users are treated as “reporting entities”. That means they must register with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND), carry out KYC and report suspicious transactions. In a June 2024 order, FIU-IND fined Binance Rs 18.82 crore for serving Indian clients without meeting those obligations. Binance reportedly registered with FIU-IND after that. Separately, CERT-In rules require virtual asset exchanges to keep KYC and transaction records for five years.
FIU registration is about anti-money-laundering rules, not about protecting your deposits. India has no deposit insurance for crypto. Whether you get your money back after a hack depends on the exchange’s own reserves and promises. For the wider industry, the lesson is clear: hot-wallet signing systems, and the laptops and accounts of the engineers who can reach them, are now prime targets for state-backed hackers. Expect regulators to ask tougher questions about how exchanges secure them.
| Hack | Year | Approx. amount | Attributed to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | 2026 | $6.3 billion | TraderTraitor (per TRM Labs) |
| Bybit | 2025 | $1.5 billion | TraderTraitor (per FBI) |
Frequently asked questions
Was my Binance account hacked?
No. The hack hit Binance’s own hot wallets, not individual user accounts, and Binance says it will cover the losses.
When will Binance withdrawals resume?
Binance’s 30 October update aimed for a phased restart within about 34 hours, subject to security checks. Watch the official announcements page for confirmation.
Can I still deposit or trade?
Binance says deposits and other unaffected services kept working. Wait until withdrawals are fully restored before you move large sums.
Is someone offering to recover my Binance funds?
That is a scam. Nobody can “recover” funds for a fee. Never share your seed phrase or 2FA codes, or install remote-access apps for a stranger.
Bottom line
This is the biggest crypto heist ever, and North Korea’s TraderTraitor is the main suspect. For ordinary Indian users, though, the advice is simple. Stay calm, trust only binance.com and the official app, lock down your account, and treat every refund offer as a trap. The Proof of Reserves results due on 2 November and Binance’s promised post-mortem will show how well its promises hold up.
